The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra was instituted by (or given by Lord Shiva to) Rishi Markandeya. This mantra was used to save the life of Chandra Dev when he was cursed by King Daksh. It is one of the most powerful mantras recited in the Vedas and it houses the power of Lord Shiva and can resolve any problem.

It is an integration of three Hindi words i.e. "Maha" which means great, "Mrityun" which means death, and "Jaya" which stands for victory which turns into victory over death.
